Hello All, I have an 1895 one quarter Anna, in pretty good condition, apart from the the E in "one" being largely missing. I say largely, as there is an ever so faint outline of an E, but it is hard to see.

I wondered if this could be a minting error, as I would imagine it would be pretty difficult for someone to amend / deface the coin so precisely so as to remove the E without also affecting surrounding features, or leave scratches, any thoughts?

I can't find details of any such errors online from cursory searches, but what would be the point in defacing the coin in such a way?

I'd be interested and grateful to hear any views on this! Many thanks in advance.

Did you check for Grease Filled Die? Looks like part
of the serif on the "N" is also affected.
Use the Search at top of sidebar for more info.

Many thanks JimmyD, that looks like a very likely culprit! Apologies for my ignorance - I'm new to this and hadn't heard of this particular effect before.

Agree that it's a filled die.
Nice coin anyway - those uniform-like princely states coins aren't too common.
