I'm a pretty new collector and a newer member. I've been looking at auction sites and I see coins that say uncirculated and mint bu and they seem to he stained or dirty can they get this way if they weren't removed from their packaging or is it improper care? Also if they say mint bu and uncirculated and look this way do they need to be graded again for accuracy on their grade and value?

a coin can still be mint, and uncirculated, if it is still in the original packaging, some coins naturally tone depending on the conditions it has been put through..so for a coin to look dirty in it's original packaging, is usually just toning, that has occurred.. and if a graded coin is still in it's original holder, and has toned since it was enclosed, then yes the grade would still be the same, but the eye appeal may have changed..

Here is an example of a photo on the site. I cropped to an area I'm asking about.

As long as a coin doesn't have any wear, it's uncirculated. Wear means the actual wear of the metal in circulation, not contact marks or stains.

Good to see a new collector thinking critically . Technically, an uncirculated (mint state) coin can be either brilliant or toned but not both. "BU" (brilliant uncirculated) shouldn't be used to describe toned coins but some folks do so without really thinking about what it implies. In my experience, major auction houses tend to use numismatic terminology with thoughtful precision. ebay sellers not so much.

Attractive toning can increase the desirability and value of a coin. Splotchy, unattractive toning has the opposite effect.

Bottom line, being uncirculated has little to do with being attractive.

In addition, the seller's stated condition of a coin can vary widely based on knowledge and integrity of the seller....

Welcome to the challenges of coin collecting! Uncirculated doesn't mean perfect, just means it has no wear.
