That's what TV Coin guy Richy Tobasco is saying. Claiming TPG pops are low -- well duh, that's because they aren't worth grading! Comparing them with 1941-S Walker. "The 1966 has $2,000 potential." This guy will say anything.

In high end condition he's right. Don't believe it? Go get some of those "common" pieces and get them slabbed in MS-67 or better. And on the 1965 -67 that's MS not SMS. In average condition you are right they are common as dirt. But was he selling average condition?

Your post surprised me enough that I looked at the PCGS price guide, and it indeed lists the 1966 half at $3750(!) in MS67 In MS66 it's $325, and in MS65 it's $32.
Just personal preference, but if I wanted a half dollar in MS67 I could get an early '40s Walker for under $500. And there are a heck of a lot of coins I'd rather spend $3750 on.

Rick Tomaska is an expert on Franklin and Kennedy half dollars. As they say, he wrote the book on them! In his most recent Franklin and Kennedy half dollar book, he only included NGC populations and didn't show the PCGS populations. To me, that was a bit misleading when discussing condition rarity. It also seems his discussion of prices for grade were on the high side (to support his TV prices?).

At the same time, he is trying to make a living on TV show coin sales. I've seen where his prices are high compared to grading services. Are his coins PQ for the grade to command those prices? I think, in some cases, yes. In other cases no. Sometimes his comparisons are way off and sometimes relevant. When he makes a comment like "This should be a $1000 coin" yet prices it at $150, you have to wonder if his presentation is less opinion and more to drive sales.

Interesting discussion - another example of condition rarity that appears across many series and is driven IMHO by the emergence of the set registry collectors and not the intrinsic value of the coins themselves.

He is out to make money selling anything he can. That's his job regardless of true or not.
