I'm told the green stamp is scarcer and it normally is found in red. It's not terribly valuable, but does have a nice look to it.

Nice Fractional note featuring William M. Meredith.

Not the most flattering image of a former United States Secretary of the Treasury. A fifth issue Fractional available in 10, 25 and 50 cents and issued over a small period of time, July 1874 - February 1876. Still, almost 200M were printed. The OP's note, Fr.1264 (green seal) is indeed found in fewer numbers than Fr.1265-66 (red seal). I particularly like the note for the flamboyant Spinner signature.

I dunno' - I think that's why I like it best of all the fractionals. If interested, the link has a short bio of William Meredith.

Thanks for that link. Steve's image is one of the most flattering I have seen of Meredith!

The image on the note looks like he just ate some bad fish.

I once read an article about Meredith, no idea when or where, that suggested his natural pose was famously grumpy.
