Cuds and all. There's VF20 sharpness under the dirt. The obverse lines may be marks on the planchet or more likely the remains of damage from a well-intentioned but misguided cleaning attempt in the distant past.
Leave it as is, don't bother trying to conserve it -- it's more interesting and more valuable (at least to me) without being messed with.
I don't know that it spent much time in the dirt. It does have some light aspects of that, but I've dug probably 20 large coppers in my years, and none of them survived as well as this one. It all depends on the soil tough.
I'm glad that you mentioned conservation. I was going to question whether that might be beneficial. I'm not familiar with the process, but I would believe that the reverse rim where "ed States" in "United States" is printed could be improved. There is detail there that is not apparent in the pictures.
