I am going to show a couple of photos here of this coin in its slab.

Try assigning a grade and once I have received enough opinions, I'll upload the slabbed coin:

It is so hard sometimes shooting through the plastic of a slab to get details that can be critical etc.

I had to tilt the slab 30 degrees to the plane of the camera lens in order to produce this shot: not easy.

I wanted to include the only area on this coin that appears to have had something hit it.

Please state your grade in light of this most recent evidence.

These off color hard to see luster coins really are difficult to tell AU from UNC with static photos. These are "need to be in hand" to properly grade, especially when buying. But for just a grade opinion here on CCF I'm going MS61 or MS62.

I like it -- looks original! Luster is a bit less strong than I'd like to see on an Uncirculated coin. I'd ballpark it AU55-AU58.

This is an older holder, shows you how grading standards have loosened up. This one should get an upgrade on a resubmit.

"Gradeflation", anyone? If ANACS gave it a 50 way back when, then there must be some fairly obvious signs of circulation in hand, such as breaks in luster or a minor rub, which just don't show up well in a photo. There is little likelihood in my opinion of a coin once graded 50, even in the good ol' days of conservative grading, achieving 60 or better today, no matter how much smoke and how many mirrors are employed. On the other hand, 55 or 58 is perhaps a reasonable expectation. My only concern would be that minor defects such as an old cleaning, which may have been tolerated with a slight downgrade years ago, could result in a details grade today.

mdpmedia - Are the marks on Liberty's arm you show close up bagmarks or clash marks they don't appear to be wear. I too think of grade inflation this coin shows it well. Today's standards I see lower end MS slabbed Seated coinage regularly at bigger coin shows that look every bit as this one does (from static photos anyways).

In the early 2000's this would've been a perfect crackout coin for a PCGS upgrade (heck might still do it today, but is it worth the fees?).

For me personally I'd rather have a choice high end AU coin than a baggy plain looking low end mint state coin in my own collection. AU can definitely be more pleasing than an uncirculated coin, but will never have the extra price of the uncirculated coin, a win in mind. rpdmedia, your example is a nice coin for this kind of discussion, thanks for sharing.
