Hello all. I'm new here so I hope I'm posting in the correct forum. I have a 1972 proof set, bought by a very credible seller with a good reputation, but the penny clearly has a fingerprint on the obverse. The casing doesn't appear to be tampered with at all. Can anybody help in making sense of this?

Appears to be some sort of damage, not a finger print. Regardless, you should take it back to where you bought it if possible.

Some mint worker used his finger to press an improperly seated cent into the holder. It happened. The set hasn't been tampered with. Surprise, not every coin in a proof set is perfect. And back then I don't believe you could return/exchange sets.

If you don't like the set, and you can, send the set back to the seller.

At least with the fingerprint you can identify the culprit...

to the Community!

Agreed, it could be a fingerprint from a careless mint employee. Not the first time I have seen this in an early modern proof set.

Well if you can't return it and really want a 72 proof set no big deal - they sell for around 6$ - just get a new one and crack the good proof coins out of your set and put in 2x2's
