I actually like the look of the obverse of this coin, but the reverse is pretty bland. There are some things going on with this coin. I'm pretty sure that it has been cleaned, but I am interested in understanding what type of cleaning, and potentially when. Also, I have soaked it in acetone for a few hours and it looks better than it originally did. To be more specific, the lines on the obverse look like it has been abrasively cleaned, but it has retoned (quite pleasantly IMO, but I'm sure others would give it a negative on eye appeal). Are those abrasive cleaning marks or could it be something else in manufacture process? I've read about trying to ascertain whether scratches cross the devices vs going "under" them. A couple of obvious scratches cross the stars, but outside of that, I'm unsure (and potentially the pictures aren't good enough). The fact that the reverse doesn't match the obverse is probably an obvious sign of cleaning as well. The reverse looks like it has been abrasively cleaned as well, but it has a lot of residual crud in the lettering and the eagle feathers. Do you think this is environmental, or just crud? The acetone did seem to remove some of it. I was thinking about getting a thorn and picking at some of it to see what happens. I've included angled photos as well to try and capture the fields better.

VF-25 details. The black obverse looks like it was in a fire. Hard to say for sure what happened to it and when.

Agree, VF details. There has been some attempt to clean up the obverse, I think.

VF details. coin was obviously cleaned with the obverse taking the brunt of it. some type of environmental issue occurred at some point in its life, whether is was stored improperly or was in a fire like previously noted

The scratch is borderline. It may or may not be considered details by a TPG. But those hairlines on the obverse are deep and won't fair as well in the eyes of a TPG even with the dark toning. I totally disagree with the ED comments. Not sure how anyone could draw that conclusion from these pictures. I swear to god I just had my eyes checked a few months ago. Unless something has gone terribly wrong since then, I'm fairly certain I don't need a seeing eye dog.

VF details here as well. I believe there is environmental damage, scratches, and a good cleaning.

Above all, the obverse scratch kills it.
