I have a morgan that needs lightly cleaned. I keep seeing references to soaking in acetone. Can I use acetone I get for my wood working from a box store like Lowe's or Menards, etc or do I need to find when I keep seeing called lab grade acetone? If I need to find this, where would I find it? Or can I use the box store grade and just let is soak longer? Thanks, ya'll the best!

The coin is the 1883 I posted for grading. :-)

pure acetone is available at any paint or hardware store. just make sure it is 100% acetone, you do not want nail polish remover..

Acetone will not take off a tone spot or discoloration. It works on grime and glue residue.

I'd try using 100% acetone first. If that doesn't work, you can post a picture here of the spot that needs cleaned.

If you don't get it out of the acetone before it evaporates, residue may redeposit. 1 hour should be long enough.

You want to soak it in a closed container for however long, an hour is plenty. Then, quickly rinse the coin off.

This coin http://goccf.com/t/334039 was left to soak for an hour in acetone, no change. Left for 24 hours, I still see no change. How else would you clean this, or just leave it alone?

This is one of my extra coins so it is not going into my collection. I'm just trying to learn how to clean problem spots, etc like this one has. When done, it will go back into my extras box. I would prefer to not damage the coin as otherwise it's nice and someone may want it someday.

I would probably leave it alone.

You'll probably do more harm than good trying to improve it.
