I learned to "pull a buff" from reading this website and was amazed at how it worked like magic! I had several dateless nickels and after using hydrogen peroxide, I now know most of their dates. I was wondering if there is a similar trick that could be used on gold. I have a signet type ring of one of my great grandparents but I have no idea whose it was since the engraving is so worn its unreadable. I would like to know if I could use some chemical (like the peroxide on the Buffalo nickels) to bring up the initials. I know this is a coin forum but gold is gold and you guys are the smartest when it comes to this type of thing so I thought I'd try asking. What do you think?

I have not attempted to restore a Buff's date, but I understand that the chemical process works by eating the copper in the alloy.

So, it may work with a gold coin that is 90% gold and mostly copper otherwise, but the composition of this ring may not lend itself to that. I don't know, just throwing ideas out.

First of all the solution to bringing up the dates on Buffalo nickels is 3 parts white vinegar and one part hydrogen peroxide .
I would assume Gold would be a tough metal to work on . If I were you I'd take it to a reputable Jeweler and see what he recommends .

In any situation like this you need something that can etch the materail. When you are dealing with gold that can be a real problem since few things will etch gold. A dilute aqua regia solution might work, but what dilution you would need I don't know, and the dilution would also be different depending on the karat rating of the gold. And if you are trying to bring out "engraving" that was done to the ring which has now worn away, I don't think that would be possible.
