Frosty The Snowman Or Chalky White?

NDBirdman Pillar of the Community United States 747 Posts	Posted 12/03/2018 7:01 pm What causes the frosty, whitish (chalky as I call it) colors to appear on coins? Specifically Morgans as that's what I'm working on. Is it cleanable by acetone, or is it permanent? Does it perhaps mean the coin has been dipped? Report this Post to the Staff

Slider23 Pillar of the Community United States 4468 Posts	Posted 12/04/2018 12:21 pm The frosty appearance on Morgan's is due to the rough surface of the die in the device area that cause the reflective light to diffuse in different directions. The die fields were polished that created the mirror appearance with the light reflecting directly back to the eye. As the dies wore through use, the devices became less rough and the fields less smooth, and the result was the typical business strike morgan. The prooflike coins came off the new dies from the 1st couple thousand coins struck from the new set of dies. Acetone will only take off contaminates from the frosty devices and mirror fields. A dip in eZest done correctly will not impact the frosty fields. Each time a coin is dipped, it will remove a thin layer of metal. Overdipping a coin could harm the frosty devices. Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 12/04/2018 1:12 pm I don't think it is the frost on the devices from a new die that he is talking about, or the luster from the fields through use. He description of it being "Chalky" makes me suspect he is seeing some form of corrosion byproduct. Pictures might help get answers. Report this Post to the Staff

Slider23 Pillar of the Community United States 4468 Posts	Posted 12/05/2018 3:14 pm The frosty devices on your 83 O were created when the coin was struck because of the rough device die surface. There have been some coin doctors who created an artificial frosty appearance on some Morgans to make the coin look like a DMPL. These artificial frosty coins were called California Proofs.
