Hello all,

I'm relatively new to this site. I mainly collect CDN coins & banknotes, however I also have a small collection of US banknotes, some going back to the 1920's. I also have 2 going back 1869's Georgia.

I would appreciate recommendations for a good US Banknote catalogue that gives more than just a price. Preferably something along the style of the Charlton books we have in Canada, for those that are familiar with these books.

Charlton's give considerable details about banknotes: listing varieties, errors, giving detailed descriptions, production numbers, signatures, prices by grades and much more.

I have the Red Book for my few US coins, however find this book very lacking in information in comparison to the Charlton coin books.

I have seen a number of US Banknote books listed on various websites but they only give a brief description about the US Banknote books with the number of pages. The do not show samples of the pages - poor marketing.

I welcome your input.

1) Whitman Encyclopedia of US Paper Money
2) The official Red Book Guide Book of United States Paper Money
3) Collector guide to modern Federal Reserve notes
4) if dealing with Obsolete notes there is a whole Whitman series dedicated to these notes.

Would be a few off the top of my head you can start with. I am sure others will add to the list. Or I will later tonight if no one else has once I can get home of review the titles of my other US currency reference books.

You might try Paper Money of the United States by Arthur and Ira Friedberg, which covers both large and small notes, or possibly The Standard Guide to Small Size US Paper Money by Schwartz and Lindquist. The best reference for large notes (in my opinion) would be The Comprehensive Catalog of US Federal Large-Size Notes, 1861-1929 by Chambliss and Hessler. There are others as well.

I agree with scopru and Mr.Frog on everything except the Red Book. I don't particularly like/read/purchase the Red Book because it sadly disappoints with detail.

If my feet were to the fire and told I could only own one, it would be the Whitman Encyclopedia of US Paper Money, (Bowers). A 900 page behemoth with information, professional insight and magnificent, spectacular, astonishing, breathtaking color photos of US Paper Money.

Steve - You're absolutely right on the Whitman Encyclopedia.

I also agree on the RedBook. It is light in the details and not the first thing I grab off the shelf.
The Whitman Encyclopedia is definitely a fantastic book for information. I often get lost in simply looking at the pictures.

Well, let us remember that it is the Paper Money of the United States by Arthur L. and Ira S. Friedberg that is the standard catalog numbering system (Friedberg numbers) and is a MUST for the U.S. collector.
Otherwise, I suggest going slow with purchases as you can "invest" a lot of money in books that you may not use often. Visit your local library and see what they have to offer.

Thank you everyone for your input.

I tried as suggest my library, unfortunately in Calgary and surrounding area, none of the libraries have any of the suggested books.

I also checked many Canadian web book stores hoping one of them might have some sample copies. No luck there.

Naturally they are available on many of the .com sites.

The disappointing aspect of the .com sites is the lack of photographic samples of inside pages that they all fail to provide. Even the Whitman site doesn't show samples.

They typically list the number of pages, edition and price and a brief description.

As the saying goes, "one picture is worth a thousand words".

I will contact Whitman and see if they have any sample pages.

My current interests focus on the "Whitman Encyclopedia of US Paper Money" and "Paper Money of the United States".

Once again, thank you all for your input.

PS - if any of you or any of your numismatic collector friends are thinking of coming to Calgary for the 2019 Calgary Stampede (Worlds Biggest Outdoor Rodeo), my club will host the RCNA show immediately after the Stampede.

Keep well and Merry Christmas, Happy New year and Happy Hanukkah to all.
