- At what point do I send a coin to a third-party grader?

- Does it matter on the price?

- Do I wait until I have a coin that would grade above a certain level?

- I have looked at photograde for a number of coins, but if I estimate one side grades at a G-4, and the other side grades at a VF-20 or VF-25, which grade does the coin get?

- Finally, I have a three-cent silver coin, but the year has been rubbed off. Is the year necessary to determine value?

Any help you can provide this novice would be appreciated. I'll post some pics here later. Thanks in advance!

to CCF. A coin needs a retail value of at least $150 to justify all costs involved to have TPGed.
Post pics of the 3 cent coin.

That's up to you to decide. Sentimental coins can be worth a penny and be worth sending in to protect them or just because you want to.

As far as value you really want the added value to be equal to the cost of grading if not more. There is no lower value limit as what you paid matters, what it is matters ect, there are just a lot of variables.

That said once you get over 150/200ish in value you will have a much harder time selling it if it is still raw.

Only from a value standpoint, but lowballs can be very valuable too.

It would be very unusual for such an extreme split. Obverse grades are weighted a little more than reverse grades

Yes a year is necessary, some things it's possible to figure out the year without it being present though.

I submitted my first batch before discovering the Coin Grading forums. Take your best guess, and then post a topic in the appropriate subforum of Modern Coin Grading, Classic Coin Grading, Foreign Coin Grading, etc.

If I had done this, I would have made some different submission decisions.

Way better than photograde is to look at coins found in the PCGS (or NGC) price guides:

https://www.PCGS.com/prices/

After some clicking, you find yourself on ha.com - which has the greatest archive in the world of US coinage pictures online. Most of which are extremely high resolution. Simply search ha.com for the coin your after and watch the time dwindle away!

One hint on grading for you, the NUMBER ONE factor is eye appeal. All professional graders use good light and about 10 seconds to determine a grade. Magnification only comes into play at the end, probably to verify just a couple areas in detail to see if it could change their mind.

Another thing to keep in mind - photographs are little more than an approximation of how a coin actually looks in hand. They tend to expose and magnify minor imperfections - or the opposite. Light is a tricky devil to the camera eye!
