What about the rim... is the quarter sized one the same height? Can you get better pics of the coins? I see 2 senerios... A hammered or pressed coin *note how flattened out the device (buffalo) is or it could be a Buffalo nickel stamped on a quarter planchet? But something doesn't look right to me...? Interested to hear what the pros have to say...

Yeah I don't know much about this one. By observation the design (devises) are larger on the bigger coin than the normal Buffalo nickel... If it was a nickel stamped on quarter planchet the design would still be same size... leaving more space between the devices and the rim. My guess is it is tampered with..flattened out or a fake reproduction? But I am guessing! You will get some real answers soon! :) BTW, to CCF!

If the weights are the same, then the larger one was altered.

Good point Coop!
The device size is larger on larger coin... and the devices retained the same distance from the rim as a normal coin? - that is what I think is suspicious!

Thanks for the welcome and the info everyone. So back on topic what would be able to do this as hammering would flatten the devices as the edge is still raised.

I still have to have them weighted but the bigger seems to be heavier.

It maybe a counterfeit coin then. The color doesn't look right? How could you make one. Two pieces of leather and use a vise of squeeze the coin. When this happens it often makes them out of round.

There could be various reasons for it changing color... you should post it up in a separate post with a picture ;) Let's see it...
