Hi I'm totally out of my realm with this coin, tried to use what looks like initials on it to identify but no luck so far. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? Weight is 14.9 grams, measurements are between 28mm and 32mm.

@RM, this is Byzantine. I will recommend to the mods that it gets moved over to the Ancients & Medievals section of CCF so that the right eyeballs get on it. Also, your second pic (which is the obv) is upside down. Please consider posting a rotated pic to this thread to help folks with identification.

This is echizento's area, but looks to me like Justin II with Sophia, possibly "THEUP" mintmark (Antioch).

For comparison:

and

Here's Beastcoins' description for that second one:
Justin II, Æ Follis, Year 13 (577/578), Theoupolis (Antioch), Officina 3
VNTI_C-... (blundered legend)
Justin at left, Sophia at right, seated facing on double-throne, both nimbate, holding globe surmounted by a large cross between them
Large M, A/N/N/O to left, cross above, X/III to right, G below
THEUP' in exergue
29mm x 31mm, 15.16g

I'll leave the book recommendations to others, but a few decent online sources include:

Byzantine coins and their values is a good book for this type. By David Sear. It's about 50GBP.
