I found what I think is a 1970 S double die.

I know, I know...I must post pics Which I will do shortly, but does anyone have a close up picture of a '70S double die? I'm pretty excited about it, but before I totally get my hopes up, I just want to compare.

Hi,

There are several die varieties on these. 99.999% of the time though, a coin with Machine Doubling is found. I'm not saying that to rain on any parade but on these things, it's better if you can post a picture of what you see rather than we try to post 20 pictures of something for you to compare to.

Thanks,
Bill

Alright, here we go...the most prominent doubling is of the date and mintmark, and of Lincoln's nose and lips

It's all Machine Doubling. Very common....The fact that the doubling is flat and that the mint mark is also doubled is the dead giveaway. Mint marks were added to dies by hand at that point in time. So if it were a doubled die, the die would have doubling on it prior to a mint mark being added.

That would result in the date being doubled and the mint mark being "undoubled" or normal in appearance.

Besides all the explanation, after you've seen as much Machine Doubling as I have, you just know what it looks like in an instant.:-)

Thanks,
Bill

One other clue in this example of Machine Doubling is that both the date and the mint mark have the same directional doubling. If this were a doubled die and a RPM (which has happened), you would not see doubling in the same exact direction since both anomalies were applied at different times; the design during hubbing and the mint mark well after that hubbing.

BJ makes a good point. I should not have implied that there can be no doubling of a mint mark at all. Besides his example of an RPM on a doubled die there are also examples of doubled dies with Machine Doubling. One of the recently discovered 1969 S DDO cents has some Machine Doubling as well as being a doubled die. The key , as BJ mentions is the direction of the doubling.

Thanks,
Bill
