Not sure what this coin is. It looks like there might be the remnants of a date under the letters DTM. Any ideas?

This is Portuguese India (Malacca).

Not sure if the coin is original though.

For comparison:

That Tanga on numista from Malaca is silver, while yours clearly isn't, but hopefully this gets you closer.

If there is no copper denomination of this type then I would assume that this is a contemporary counterfeit in bronze.

Thanks for the info. This definitely got me looking in the right place. However I can't even find the silver tanga (from the above link) in the standard catalog of world coins. Do you guys know if there is a better source to find a comprehensive list of these types?

This silver 1/2 Tanga, KM64, has a design very similar to yours, though it is the next ruler, John IV (and your date looks like 1634). https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...duid-1494941

There is also a denomination in copper at around this time period, the bazaruco. However, looking through NGC, I cannot find an image of this denomination that looks like your coin (they have a cross reverse, not a monogram).

Maybe supports the notion of a contemporary counterfeit in copper (at least we are all assuming it's copper?)
