are these coins meant to be read upright on both sides without having to turn it?

I.E. if youre looking at it heads up, when you flip it over should the date be at the bottom or at the top?

you'll find that American coins are unusual, in having the sides rotated.

Worldwide, most coins are like the British example.

An interesting exception is British gold coins, which are "upside down".

ah, okay. it's wonderful that I've started my career in the U.K. forum by being an ignorant american haha.

on the other side, are these worth much.. or anything?

two shillings became 10 New Pence when the Brits went decimal.
That gives it a face value of 20 Seppo cents.
After that, value depends on rarity, condition, etc.
Which year is it ?

True, it's quite well worn. Still, it's sterling silver (.925 fine) - worth over 5 dollars at current silver prices.
