I found a used 2001D quarter is this an error coin? or what caused this? I just started coin collecting this past year so I am still kind of new to these things

That bubble is caused by the heating of the planchlet. No extra value.

Heat damage and stains. Post minting damage ( PMD) not an error.

Heating the coin makes a metal bubble on them. (the metals do not expand the same when heated:

To CCF! You have a Quarter with bad Post Strike Damage ( PSD) unfortunately. It's only worth face value. You can safely spend it.
