If you notice the direction of the shift on the tip of the Wheat ears. How can the shift ( MD ) occur in opposite directions, on the same coin. The secondary strikes appear to both shift towards the rim, on opposite sides of the coin.
Wouldn't the shift be in the same direction on opposite sides of the coin ?

Dan

Technically, the shift on your coin IS in the same direction - vertically. You can see this on the top of the E in ONE on the right hand picture. MD can happen in any direction, not just left-right.

Dave, Thanks, after looking at the coin for awhile I started to think along that same line.

Also Machine Doubling doesn't follow any rules. It can change at will. It is caused by a loose machine.

From strike to strike it can vary.

Yep, MD is rather "unpredictable."
