Thad, my opinion is you should have not gone for this one. Not sure how many were damaged since you mention bent and damaged coins. The ones that are not damaged in some way or other you may want to really look over for any possible error coins. Otherwise, I think you should have passed on this one. Damaged coins are difficult to get rid of unless you know a jeweler that melts Silver.

If you can get junk silver right now at 10-11x face, then you should jump on it. APMEX was paying roughly 12x face to buy from people so if you have enough, you can make a small profit.

Quote: Looking through them I saw: merc dimes, eisenhower dimes (many looked MS), wash quarters, JFK/Frank/Walking halves. Those Eisenhower dimes must be worth a lot of money

Want to really annoy a dealer? Ask him what he charges for a bag of scrap silver. Then tell him you want to buy a roll of Frankins or WL for that price, pro-rated.
Keep in mind that the scrap price is exactly that. A bulk price for junk of the seller's choosing. Expect to pay more if you have specific needs, or want to buy in dribs and drabs.

I wonder how much a bunch of "Hamilton" dimes would go for.
Hamilton dimes
WOW, am I glad I read this post. There are actually many of the Hamilton Dimes there for my collection. Hey Thad if you did get those coins always check out the Mercury dimes for rotated reverses. Many are anywhere from a few degrees off to almost 90 degrees off.

Asking bulk then asking specific doesn't really annoy a dealer that much I'm afraid. You already gave the answer - it will cost more.
Think about it. If you walk into a butcher shop and ask the price of a whole cow by pound then expect the same for only the T bones what will they tell you? It costs more.
You're not an annoyance at this point. You're an idiot.

Been a dealer for 40+ years. Trust me, the third time in a day you have to explain that "junk silver" doesn't mean they can pick pre-21 Morgans, it's annoying.
