This is a 1938 D Buffalo nickel from my Grandfather's collection and it almost looks like a gold toned satin finish. I do not think they had satin finishes for Buffalo nickels so am I seeing toning from being in a 2x2 since 1938?

Not that I am an expert by any shot but I do agree with the MS67, could be a bit higher if it were in hand for a closer examination. In any instance anyone would be happy to own it.
Congratulations

Not good at grading...MS66. Nickels are known to tone a golden color. John1

@Jim0815, would you be willing to post a closeup of the mm? I'm not certain, but I think I see some of the Stage A markers for WRPM-006.

I believe it is the WRPM-012. Never noticed that, I thought it might be MD.

Looking at the closeup, I think you nailed it. Your coin is a much sharper example and earlier die state than the one Wexler has on his site. He doesn't have any markers identified. It might be worth looking for possible markers.
Quick question on the back of the Indian's neck and the area beneath the third feather. Are the marks from the strike, or from contact? Is there any indication of a clash or die polishing in that area or below the Indian's chin?
Fantastic coin!

@fortcollins, the areas in which you are referring r to on the back of the neck and below the third feather is from the strike. Also, there is absolutely nothing to show that there is any indication of a clash or polishing below the chin. The only mark of the obverse that is PSD is a small scratch above the eyebrow. I've looked at everything PCGS and NCG has and I've seen nothing in pictures any more beautiful than this one. The scratch is the only thing that really is keeping me from getting it graded. Still a beautiful coin tho and Thank you my friend!

Looking at the pics, I can't imagine this going less than 66, maybe 67. It's a fantastic coin. It could very well be condition census for the RPM. Thanks for sharing it with us!

@fortcollins, I sent pics to Mr. Wexler and he indeed confirmed it is the WRPM-012.
