I recently got this from APMEX from a recent ebay deal after a coupon that applied with coins not in the bullion category. (rare nowadays)

I'm conflicted about the purple colors on the edge. I am tempted to have them exchange it, since I believe it draws away from the coin's luster/proof condition otherwise, but wanted to see what others here thought.

Pictures in a few light conditions below.

I can't imagine what value would be added by the purplish toning and since it COULD discourage some potential buyers in the future {unless your going Pharoh style and planning to have it buried with you} I'd lean to getting it exchanged.....

Some like toning some don't, if you are one of the latter, exchange it.

It seems odd to me that 14K gold would naturally turn a purple hue. I'd say it was an AT project for someone. I don't know what these coins sell for today, but they used to trade pretty close to the spot price of 1/4 ounce of gold, so visual impairments were not a huge deal.

Thanks for the replies. I'll contact APMEX to see if they will exchange it based on their satisfaction guarantee, as the listing didn't mention anything regarding toning -- it was a catch all for a proof gold canadian 1/4oz of their choice.

Pure gold won't tone, but the metals used in an alloy (silver, copper) can cause it to tarnish/tone.

I think the colours are great. Plus, toned gold is all the rage now. You might even get a small premium for it. But it's your coin. If you aren't satisfied, ask to exchange.

Definitely comes down to eye appeal. I personally like the weird looking stuff. Irrelevant of grade or appeal, thee coins are worth weight in gold.
