...this story is true, but, admittedly, I, myself, would have a hard time believing this story coming from a stranger, & due to my jovial and mostly non-violent nature, I won't be offended by anyone's skepticism...
...This happened at a casino in Tunica MS, owned by a pioneer in the gaming industry ... It's a story of money found, & contrary to what most any casino's policy was or is, they let us keep the money...
...I will relate to the best of my memory...
...The year was 1996,. My wife & I had just built a house in Southaven, MS, about 45 minutes from the Tunica, Ms casinos. We spent a number of Friday evenings at our favorite casino, (shall remain nameless, you'll see why...) playing Blackjack. I had learned basic Blackjack strategy as a kid (from an uncle who was a whiz at Bridge, Poker & Blackjack). Using basic Strategy will bring your odds of winning to just under 50%. I later learned how to count a deck, or multiple decks (casinos in Tunica offered choice from 1 deck, two deck & 6 deck shoes) ... In counting, the number of decks isn't really a factor, as long as the house will play out most of the cards (casinos quickly learned to re-shuffle often to negate counting). Counting + Strategy will bring your odds to just over 51%...
...In 1996, this particular casino would play out over 3/4 of the cards in a 6 deck shoe, giving an edge to counting. Pit Bosses were always looking for counters, but the more inexperienced bosses were on the low-end ($1 / $5 / $25 tables). & the camera guys ... well, an acquaintance who maintained security cameras for 3 of the local casinos told us that his guys spent most of the time trying to look down girl's blouses, or up their skirts ... so much for surveillance ...lol
...Anyway... my wife had picked up on & understood Basic Strategy quickly, as she was in accounting & very attentive to detail ... I would give her $200 & send her off to the $5 tables, where she'd play until she was $35 - $50 ahead, at which time she'd quit (smart girl) ... she usually did pretty well ...
...this particular night, I was playing (poorly) at a $25 table, when my wife walked up with a black chip she'd found. She said:..."Look what I found on the floor! What should I do with it?" ... she was holding a $500 chip. The PIT Boss looked straight at her & said..." Honey, you march yourself straight over to that (pointing to the) Teller's window & cash it "...
... Most any casino would have confiscated that chip, but this one did not. They cashed it ...
...She did as was suggested, & went to the bar to relax & enjoy a cocktail. I continued to play (poorly), & the table players, the dealer & Boss talked about my wife's good fortune...
...About 20 minutes later, my wife walked up again. ..."You're not gonna believe this"... "What?", I asked ... Well, she said, you know those white & orange $1 chips that you tip the waitresses with?"... "Yeah", says I ... Well I thought I'd found one, on the floor, at the bar" ... "OK, so?"... "Well", she responded, "when I picked it up, it was orange, & had 3 zeros behind the 1"...a $1000 chip!... "Where is it?", I asked ... " she fanned out 10 $100 bills.."I cashed it"... "while I was in the Teller's line, I looked down & found a $5 chip & a penny ... I cashed the $5 chip, too "...
...the Pit Boss was floored ... he said that it was not unusual to find chips on the floor, that rich Delta farmers would come there, get drunk & wander around with buckets full of chips sloshing onto the carpet. He said that they found $1, $5, $25 chips regularly, & the occasional (rare) $100 chip, but the had never heard of someone loosing a $500 chip, & that the $1000 chip, well he had no words ...
...they let us keep the money...
...For my part, on the way to the car, I found a Jefferson nickle & a Lincoln Cent, bringing our night's total find to $1505.07...
...THE END ...
