How long has that green spot been on the reverse?

I have no idea, it has been in storage for around 30 years since my parents inherited it. The coin came from a family member who was a jeweler with his dad in San Francisco around late 1800's to early 1900's.

Looks real, Uncirculated, and with the obverse and reverse die defects seen in varying states on BG-789. It might also have been cleaned at some point, unfortunately.
In a straight-grade MS62 holder it's worth around $275 to $300, it's a scarce variety (R7) but the market of buyers is extremely small.

I'd have it slabbed by a TPG.

Gold doesn't usually show those green spots but copper does. Best to have an expert look at this one because copies have been on the market since the 1960's.

Quote: Gold doesn't usually show those green spots but copper does. It could be a touch of PVC residue too. Once authenticated it would be worth several hundred dollars so it is worth sending in.

I'd find a coin shop and have them check the gold content, only had copper coins with green like that. Looks different than a lot of pvc damage coins given me last year. IMHO

The green that was on the coin was just debris, I blew air on it and it came right off. I just weighed it and it is 3.1 grains.

I certainly haven't the skill or knowledge to authenticate it , but I do know that very many copies of these were made for jewelry purposes, in various purities of gold, and are known as 'jeweler's copies'.
I have an example in gold plated brass. The design style in the example that I have, is obviously 'off'.
