Here is a friendly amendment to @tbop's first guess: The inscriptions use different fonts. Specifically, the fake has serifs, whereas the real coin uses a sans serif font. This is most visible on some letters (like the A and Z).
Added: by the way @nss-22, thank you for doing these threads as it makes us all more aware of these design features.

@scopru "The detail of the land is very different." That has already been identified. You can guess again.
@keith12 "No fur on the fake" That is a difference, but not one of the 7 I identified. You can guess again.

I generally chalk that up to poor photography.

If someone was to go to all the trouble of reproducing this coin why not make at least the 9 similar to the original

Differences identified so far that I was thinking about:
1) The date #'s are different 1978 (mcshilling) Yes, every digit in the date is a different shape than those used on the genuine Krugerrand.
2) The denticles on the fake are way to long (loonielewy) Yes, not only are they too long, they are too separated.
3) Counterfeit lacks details under the Sprinkbok's feet (nfine)
4) Bottom legend font size is way too big on the fake (llewellin)
5) 6) 7) If you don't see your guess here, then either it has already been guessed (listed above) or was not one of the 7 differences I identified (listed below).
a) Color is different. When reviewing photographs, color is not a reliable indicator a coin is genuine or counterfeit.
b) No fur on the fake.
c) KRUGERRAND uses a different font.

@spruett001 You are correct, neither coin used sans serif font for KRUGERRAND.

Ok, day 2, I'm sticking with the denticles. There is a greater number on the real one.
I tried with my not so good eyes to count them, and saw more quite quickly on the real one.

d) more denticles on the genuine coin than on the counterfeit.
There are indeed more denticles on the genuine coin, but that is not one of the differences I identified for this challenge.
