Finally got my order of 2 half-dollar boxes in!

What should I be looking for when searching through these?

I know before 1970 is silver, but does that include 1970?

And what are the no FG initial? Is that a certain year or any year?

I heard that some 1776-1976 half-dollars have 80% silver, true?

Personally, I would edge check first. Silver should be easy to spot that way.

Yes 1970-D is 40% silver. In 1976 there were 40% silver uncirculated and proof coins struck at San Francisco. The no FG is 72-D, 82-P & 83-P.

Any halves 1964 and older are 90% silver. 1965 through 1970-D and 1976-S are 40% silver.
Look for any S mint proofs.

90% silver proofs were struck at San Francisco from 1992 to present.

Occasionally a commemorative might be in there

If you own a copy of cherrypickers refer to that. If not here's what I look for.

Silver, 1972 NO FG, 1974-D DDO, 1982 NO FG, 1972-D DDO.

Thanks for all the replies!

That is what I thought but just wanted to clarify.

So basically, look at date and if it is 1970 and before keep it.

Anything with an 'S' as the mint mark, keep.

Anything 72, 82, and 83 look for no FG on the back.

Good luck, and remember, dump the spoils at a different bank than you bought them from, it will keep you on good terms with your buy bank.
