I am trying to determine the VAM for this 1884 Morgan. I thought it might be VAM 12 because I see some doubling of the motto, although it is not the same as 12 I do not know what it could be? I tried to get clear images but if you need an area specific then let me know and I will try and get an image of that area.

To me with these pics all I see on front, 1 and couple of stars doubled, back ONE doubled. I don't see it as a 12 but need much closer pics to tell myself. Is this one a Far date?

Quote: Is this one a Far date? NDBirdman, Yes, it is a far date. I can take a picture under a scope of a particular area, just let me know what would make it easier to identify.

I run all mine under a scope and take a pic of all defects/errors etc I can find. I'm still learning myself, a long ways from nailing VAMs. Scope it out and post all the errors/cracks/doubling etc you can find on it. I will look at them when I get a chance but no guarantee I can figure it out, I have many myself that confound me. That far date eliminates alot of VAM numbers, makes it a little easier.

I took some more pictures like you suggested of areas I found. Does this help? This is the letter "A" in Amerca. This is the "O" of Of. These are the "A & R" in Dollar This is the "WE" In God We Trust. Thanks for your assistance.

Any doubled reeding? Clashing? Die breaks? Trying to magnify on my screen, is that a line under the 1?
Your scope gets up closer than mine, what are you using? Or is this pic magnification?

Toning is throwing me off quite a bit, not a fan of it myself. I can't tell, does it possibly have the double ear of a VAM 19? I can't tell if it does, if it's tone, or a shadow. Just another thought, I'm trying to match some up.

I'm also unable to find a VAM with a line under the one, is it a line or PMD?

Ok, Here are some better closeup images of the areas. I am using an AmScope with 30x and 60x. Quote: Any doubled reeding? Clashing? Die breaks? Trying to magnify on my screen, is that a line under the 1? No doubled reeding that I can see. No Clashing No Die Breaks Here are some images of below the one. Quote:does it possibly have the double ear of a VAM 19? Yes, just barely but it does look like it.

I'm on the fence now about both of those. I have to admit, now I'm stumped, I don't know where I would put this one. Almost looks like a P, or R sideways under the one, not sure if that is considered a line, or a slightly shifted (doubled) 1. I don't think that is a doubled ear, but I'm still learning. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will eventually chime in.
