This is my first coin purchase. I just got it out of the mail and scanned it in. I think that overall it's pretty nice but the scratches are probably going to bring it down. Thanks in advance.

I'd give it a 61 due to the cuts on the face.

I think it may be time to look up the word 'slider' in coin terminology. This one gets anywhere from AU-58 to perhaps MS-61, but I wouldn't be surprised if it saw some circulation in its life. On another note, great scans.

@ halfabustisbetter:
Yes, that would make sense if it was a slider. I do have a hard time believing that those scratches came from a %100 uncirculated coin. The seller listed uncirculated but...

The pictures look like scans instead of digital photographs. This makes it very difficult to differentiate between a slider and an uncirculated coin. My initial feeling was that this coin would grade at MS62, but I would like to see the luster. There are darker areas on the eagle's breast that may indicate cabinet rub, which would put it in the AU58 area. Sorry I can't be more precise.

Would it help if I took a digital picture instead of the scan. In hand, this coin has a very nice luster to it. I will try to post pics.

Digital pictures may help in deciding if what looks like wear is wear or scanner contrast issues.

Excuse the picture quality, but it is the best the I can get with my camera/lighting setup. I hope it helps some.

I cropped the pics down some. I can't sharpen the image significantly, however. If you have a macro setting on your camera, it should be turned on. Also, the camera must be completely stationary (on a tripod or other steady surface). Digital images are very unforgiving of any movement at all.

I had it on macro and I had it setting on two piles of books on either side. I will try one more time to see if I can get better results.

This is with macro and a stationary tripod.

Cabo,
What type of camera are you using, MP?, and how close are you to the coin?

It's a Samsung Digimax A402. It's a 4 megapixel camera. These pictures were taken from 6-8 inches away from the camera.

4mp is definitely good enough to take clearer pics. Tripod and lighting are good. I would try a couple of things:
1. make it about 10 to 12 inches, no macro, and make sure you use the timer function, and then auto focus and press the shutter. 2. With macro function on, do you have macro and super macro, or just macro? Both should be able to focus better. Super may not allow you to zoom is all. Try getting closer, even though you will sacrifice lighting a little, and again, set up the timer and focus and press.
