I've got a minor dilemma here. This coin exhibits a complete rim on the obverse so I'm thinking G-4 obverse; however, the reverse is another story. I don't believe there is enough detail left to even warrant a grade of AG-3 - might squeek by as a FR-2.
My problem is - how do you grade a coin with so much difference in the two sides? Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks - Ralph

I think the grade would technically net out to AG3. However, those rim nicks on the reverse would ensure it would never get into a slab and hurt its value.

Did you get this off ebay? And I agree that the dig in the center and rim nicks would probably keep it out of a slab.

Guys, I'm not real sure how you came up with the idea that I wanted to get this coin slabbed. I simply wanted to get opinions from some of the forum members as to what grade they would assign it if it were their coin.

The coins I own are for my own personal satisfaction and enjoyment - I'm less concerned with their worth than I am in how much pleasure I derive from getting a coin I don't have. Now, that may not make alot of sense to some folks who are more into having the highest quality or the most valuable, but this enjoyable hobby is, to me, just that.....an enjoyable hobby.

Coin came from a coin shop about 25 miles from where I live.

Thanks for your replies.

That isn't a dig, it is the ear.

Ralph,
I believe the obverse would merit a G4 while I would call the reverse FR2 resulting in a grade of AG3. It looks like a low grade but reasonably affordable example of a key date Liberty nickel, second only to 1885 in VF and lower. Great way to plug an album hole if you don't have $3-400 to spend. As far as the grading differential, the relief of the obverse is higher than the relief of the reverse design so split grades are common in lower grades.
Rest in Peace

Not a dig? Looks like one. Guess I'm not familiar with the type.

I just could have sworn I saw it on ebay recently, but this makes a good date filler without paying a huge amount of money...

What did you pay for it?

Thank you biokemist6 - that's the kind of answer I was looking for (and expected here at CCF). It's pretty much what I had thought, but it's always good to hear my thoughts from someone else. I believe I will inventory it as: split grade-G-4/FR-2(net grade-AG-3).
