I don't think this is an alloy impurity, but rather some mishap has befallen the obverse. Likely a details coin. Report this Post to the Staff

As much as there is in the top I would think there would be alot below? That make sense? Is this common on cents? Report this Post to the Staff
Coinfrog Bedrock of the Community United States 94367 Posts	Posted 01/09/2019 6:49 pm A re-punched date usually only shows traces of the original punch, that is, areas that were not completely effaced before the second effort. These "leftover" bits from the first punch are particularly common on IHC from the 1860s. Think of it as a bit of cake still on your plate after you've asked for seconds. The first punch was lower than the second punch. It was re-punched higher, this leaving the 8 under the 8, showing in the top loop. Where did the bottom of the first punch go? It should also be showing below the bottom loop, just like the top shows in the middle of the upper loop? I guess this is just over my head. Report this Post to the Staff
