I bought a roll of nickels at FV from a dealer. A number of them have a bright green substance on them. I assume this is verdigris, but I thought it tended to only affect copper and brass coins. What is the best way to remove?

Nickels are 75% copper so while it is less common, it can certainly happen with nickels.

Acetone soak and then verdi-care might help. It looks like its dug in pretty well though.

Try acetone first. If that doesn't help, then Verdi-Care will neutralize any verdigris. Depending on what coins are affected, though, it may not be worth using Verdi-Care.

Nickels are 75% copper, 25% nickel.
What surprises me, is that verdigris is not more often found on them.
Perhaps it has something to do with the protective influence of the nickel in the alloy.
Rest in Peace

to acetone then Verdi-Care . Funny that green is so bright it looks like a melted candy cane dripped on it .

Unless there is something special about the coin it isn't worth using Verdicare on it. You have a coin worth 5 cents that after treatment will be worth 5 cents.

Agree with Conder, save your money and time unless it's special.

If you do remove that, you'll be disappointed. Instead of verdigris, you'll have spots and the coin will qualify as being cleaned.

Verdigris is green, but so are some salts of nickel.

I suggest you look up any of those coins Unless worth a lot, just wasting time and money trying to clean.

Thanks for the feedback. The coin pictured is probably the worst of the group I have. I've never used acetone on a coin before, so these low value coins will be my test subjects.
