I have this quarter I purchased when I was very new to collecting anythig but wheats. I was going over some of my coins to practice grading when I noticed this, what looks like extra talons. Are they well placed chips or what? The coin has the rusted obverse and it is a Breen 3924. Thanks for any help. I hope the second image is OK, I took it at 10X mag, and enlarged it 50% and cropped it down

i would love to see more and better pictures. It may be possible that the 25C was added to the die incorrectly.

Try to give me the best shots you can of the area with the marks as well as a picture of the 25 C. If you can get both at the same time with the macro setting of your camera, I can try some overlays.

My die variety eye sees the lower right side of the 5 and the lower right part of the C as possible candidates for the marks.

Anyway....I havent heard of this before but I am not an expert on these quarters.

Whatever it is, you have something there that should be analyzed.

Thanks,
Bill

Here are some scans, I hope they help.
I see what you do with the marks, but there is a mark near the third claw as well, that would not be part of a denomination punch I don't think.

I think these pics will work. I have to go out and teach a few voice lessons today, when I get back, I'll work on this.

Thanks,
Bill

OK...definitely not part of the 25 C....I'll work to rule in or out the claws tomorrow.
