I recently won a very nice 1909 Newfoundland 50 cent piece on ebay. Seller has low, but good Feedback and lives in Greece. Today I got a registered letter from seller in Greece that required a signature. It had nothing in it but a blank piece of paper! Letter appeared to not been tampered with so I believe it never had a coin inside.

Got on the phone with ebay and they assured me that they will refund my money if the seller doesn't. But I would much rather have the coin.

I feel your pain. I had purchased some LMCs from an inexperienced seller. They just threw the coins in an envelope and mailed them. They had torn their way out of the corner of the envelope while enroute. received empty envelope. Look closely for a tear at the corner of the bottom folds.

Greek customs has been described as a large "Buffet Table," I never do business to or from there.

The envelope was in excellent condition and did not appear to have been tampered with.

ebay finally refunded my money ($161 ) but I had to file a police report. I have only been buying coins a few months on ebay and already four problems. This being the worse. But two auctions I won, the seller did not have the coin - still waiting fer a refund. The fourth problem was they sent the wrong coin. Again still waiting for a refund so I called ebay. The initiated a request. I got a couple replies that say the refund has been issued but so far it is NOT in my account.

I asked the guy at ebay if this is normal for coins and he confirmed that coins are one of the highest problem areas on ebay! - arrrgh! At least they don't charge a buyer's premium.

I have gotten a few what I felt were real bargains. The 1902-H small H Canada 5 cent that I posted in a different post is an example. It is a blazer and if I get it certified (not likely) would I think come back a MS-64. But I like coins without the slab so I can display them in a way I like.
