With Halves,
if the Bank won't take 'em,
spend 'em on your gas.

Can't do that with returned Pennies.
? The Banks have to take Pennies in large amounts, because nobody else will?

Hcmusicguy...

Thank you for an insider's perspective to this issue.

Hopefully, the OP can now realize his "problem" was created by him and must be solved by him. The bank/CU must look out in their best interests, not his!

I do half dollar boxes sometimes 6 per month other times none at all. When I order them I take 3 boxes at a time. After searching I will return no more than 25 rolls $250 to any one bank. This is a little more work for me but I don't want to make any enemies. I don't have any banks that I deal with that have machines that accept halves. No one has refused me yet.

I've been roll hunting the banks since 1977 and not much has changed.

@Hcmusicguy I get your analogy with the shoes. But really, how much money is this costing you?

On a side note, why do branches even exist if they cannot provide services such as this? Being the 21st century, I think its only a matter of time before all banking is done online and only a corporate office exists for each bank.

@cabowabo your strategy is really what I was looking for, an answer to my problem, instead of people just telling me I'm being a jerk. I've only been doing this for a month so calm down people. I'll give this a shot at only taking in 25 rolls at a time to different banks/locations.

I'm done commenting on this post since cabowabo gave me the strategy I was seeking.

The world is changing. Banks don't want to deal with cash or coin or employees or customers. All those things cost money. Funny thing is - banks used to give away toasters, etc. just to entice customers to open accounts, but now they won't touch cash or coin and they call that progress. Meanwhile, the Capital One Bank branch near my office has a coffee shop inside. People lounge around on sofas drinking coffee and checking their facebook messages all day long. I've never seen anyone approach a teller.

Not one person here referred to you as a "jerk". Maybe a little inconsiderate or entitled, but not a jerk.

WOW! That statement kinda blew my mind. Banks don't want to deal with cash. Kinda affirms part of the reason I collect. I want my granddaughter to have the history of american money as I foresee a time, maybe in her lifetime, when currency is no longer used. Plastic 'money' will replace it. I even see now you don't need the plastic as paying with your cellphone is gaining popularity.

Some ideas for you for moving that loose change:

My local pizza shop guy loves getting quarters so I make an effort to always pay for my meal with quarters -- usually $7. Saves him a trip to the bank for quarter rolls. And I have a box of misc coins on my table with pennies, nickels, and dimes, where each time I leave the house I grab a handful to use for exact change at the places I shop. For my pennies in bulk, I take the zincs several hundred at a time to the local coinstar. My copper pennies get tossed into a small hole in the wall in my house which currently has several thousand in there. Somebody will find them 100 years from now.

On last Friday I did take another box of 1964D Nickels to the bank (50 rolls) for deposit so I still need to hit the bank once in a while. Only odd item this time was the teller took my driver's license number which was a first. It could have been that I also gave them 50 Susan B Anthony's which maybe flagged me.

YES! a bank HAS told me that.
I was CRH'ing Australian Pennies.
That was waaaay back in 1961!

I took up an interest in ancient coins about 4 years later.
I have been more or less active in this area of numismatics ever since.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About ten years ago, I took up an interest to make up a type set of Australian coins, including all issued - into - circulation coins, 1966 - 2019, two of the best of each example I could find.
All were obtained out of pocket change, at strictly face value only.
That collection now numbers about 110 different types, all in MS60 and better.
This collection is still quite active, as new types are issued.

YES, I still collect some coins as a kid would!
