Hey All! Has anyone else been having trouble ordering half dollars from the bank? I've had 3 different bank, who all's order from Brinks, say that brinks is not allowing them to order any more half dollars. They recommended me finding a bank that orders from Loomis.
I've built a pretty good relationship with these bank tellers, and they call me if anything cool shows up. So I can't see it as them just giving me the run around.
Thoughts?

I use 3 different banks around where I live. All lately tell me they will not order any more bulk coins for anyone that does not have a business that requires them and have proof of that. And half dollars would not be ordered even if you could prove your business needed them. Many new rules about coins at those banks. If you bring in coins, they will be sent out to be counted. The total will be posted in your account. NO account with them? Then you will be sent a check minus a counting charge and postage. From what they tell me this is all due to so many people getting coins, looking through them and just bringing them back.

My bank (all branches) will not even deal with halves - boxes or rolls. When I try to cash in even a few halves that I get from asking the store cashiers the bank tellers make it known they don't like it. So I stick with cent and nickel roll searching.

I have not had any difficulties getting Halves from my bank, even when they don't have it, I order it and it'll tale about a week for them to get coins in.

That's interesting. I can see where banks might be getting sick of all this roll hunting and having to recount and reroll a bazillion coins after people are done with them, all for face value. Next time I'm in my small local bank I'll have to ask them, because I've never done it myself.

Thanks for the responses. This is insightful to hear what you guys have been dealing with.
It does seem strange. Like kbb said, I get that they are probably annoyed. And it does cost them money to reroll the change. But they are a bank.. you would think they should be able to get their customers what they want.

And they would if you paid for every single fee and cost they incur for the process. The problem is people want them to eat the cost and then just bring them back costing the bank money. Like you said they are a bank not a charity.

China is becoming a cashless society, but for many people in the US would be difficult, because most relied on the credit system.

Quote: All part of the plan to go cashless. Banks stopping coin roll hunters especially when it comes to half dollars has nothing to do with going cashless. Coin roll hunters cost banks time and money by trying to essentially search their coins for free and then the overwhelming majority come back to the bank or a bank. Banks are well aware of what people are doing with boxes of coins and are just not interested in losing money on it anymore

I actually work at a bank, when we order rolled yes it is very expensive. A box of any coin in weight plus we contract the armed guards that deliver the coin and that's not cheap.

Roll hunters have always cost banks money. Also, bank employees generally have no idea what their bank charges a courier for coin handling services. I used to walk into a strange bank and have them order me boxes when I had no account there. I had a lot of competition back in 2009, and I've seen no end to it for ten years, and I don't understand why it's still so popular, what with silver prices so low today. It's taken banks ten years to realize roll hunters cost them money?

I wonder if it would be possible to convince an LCS to begin ordering boxes as a convenience for customers, especially those who are willing to cover the courier cost or join a subscription to cover the cost.
