Looking for information on Spering Good & Co, 138 Market Street, Philidelphia Store Token. I know little about this token except that the company issued this in the early 1840's and that it is quite rare. There were two verities; brass and a silver washed brass. This one is the silver washed. This was a metal detecting recovery so is has enviro damage. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, Rulau listed two varieties, R5 and R6. He valued them from $70 in VG to $400 if uncirculated. Rulau noted that the company was listed in directories between 1841-1848. Thus, these would not be placed in the Hard Times era. HT tokens in generally tend to command higher prices than those in the so-called Merchant Era, 1845-60.

Cool find of a scarce issue, I'd say.

I just checked McElroy's 1849 Philadelphia City Directory. Spering, Good & Co., dry goods, are listed at 138 High Street, therein. Other Philly directories can be found at this website ....
