I personally would find someone who does scrapbooking, they have all kinds of different ways to do things. Or go your local hobby shop and ask them for some ideas.

Malissa that is an awesome idea! Your friend is lucky to have a friend like you that is putting in that much time and effort in the idea. I can't wait to see the final outcome!

OK here is another silly idea maybe. Go to a wedding supply place and see if they have a wedding looking 3 ringed binder. You know the kind that they normally fill with wedding photos. Now go to a coin store or coin supply place and purchase those plastic pages that hold 20 - 2x2's. In each slot put one of those coins and next to it a small card with the info printed on it. Of course with this method you could not use the currency. However, I've also seen those plastic pages for the 3 ringed binders for currency. Probably could find ones like that for proof or uncirc sets also. You could do the same. If this type of Album becomes to large, you could place the info cards on the reverse side of the page by taping it there. Of course this would always mean turning the page to see who is who or what is what. The main thing is it would look like a wedding album and they may keep it right next to their real wedding album if they get one that is. So many people nowadays are going with a DVD and/or video on a DVD instead of an Album. I think that's dumb but that's moderazation.

I do have some of the page inserts for both currency and coins and that is a very good idea too. I've actually been so wrapped up I this idea because I'm a bit of a perfectionist that it seems to occupy my mind no matter what I'm trying to concentrate on. So far I have narrowed down to a few ideas, that wouldn't include too much of other people making it for me (like somewhere cutting the slots for framing) as I really want to make it myself as much as possible so that it's very personal.
idea 1: I was thinking that if I bought a very large bulletin board (cork) that I would be able to cut the slots very easily from that material and still attach the paper notes as well with some specialty tacks that I've seen that are shaped like flowers or hearts instead of just a plain tack. Once I cut the slots out I could overly the whole board with a nicer background, or even paint it and then just get a thin sheet of glass to insert inside the edge of the board to hold everything in place.
idea 2) I used a certain type of frame when putting up my wedding photos and they came with a pre-cut type of background that was plain so people could sign it or you could write dates or anything you want really. I could use one frame for each person and then a couple extra frames for the ancestral notes and coins. Those frames even come with precut decals for wedding photos that might make it easier to design nicely. Problem with that idea is I think it would take about 10 frames and I'm not sure she'd want to hang up 10 frames instead of just one big one.
Idea 3) This of course is the simplest route (not always the best) where I could just use the 3 ring binder idea, with an appropriate binder for a wedding not just a plain one. I could include each page of coins and currency in some sensible order with scrapbook paper in between each page with maybe a printed flag from each country, the cover page as an actual family tree written up, and some blank pages at the back for them to include whatever they want to.
I'm going to hit the arts and crafts store sometime next week for sure and then I will know what supplies are even available to me at this point. Hopefully this little idea will turn out as nicely in actuality as it looks in my mind.

G'day, I think all these ideas represent a unique and very personal gift.
When my sister reached a milestone, I gave her a sovereign of the year our family migrated to Oz, and an explanation of its significance: genealogy is my other hobby. I was fortunate to find one that somebody had already mounted as a pendant. She was very pleased to get a 186 year-old gold coin, but, I think, just as pleased with the explanation.

I do wood work, and it sounds like a fun project. I'll bet you could find an o'l timer that would that like to work on a project like this. I know that they sell drillbits that are just the right size for State Quarters, so you might find some that work for your other sizes.

Ok here's an idea I got from nohope. He seals some of the coins he mails with an impulse sealer. If you have never received coins from him or used an impulse sealer the coins turn out looking like an uncirculated mint set. With an impulse sealer you could use a page protector or 2x2 page to lay out your coins and then create a seal around them/names/pictures/etc. The only downside to this would be that the coins couldn't be removed without cutting them out.

Send the info to Capital plastics and have them make it. That's their job.

The advantages of capital plastics:
Holder is inert, so the coins won't tarnish.
Easily mountable like a picture frame.
Both sides viewable.
Choice of colors.
Any diameter or shape hole available.

that does sound good but the original idea was that I make it myself as much as I possibly can.

Hi everyone, Just dropping by with an update on the gift. I have bought supplies (more than I needed I am sure) I have sat and experimented with how to make hole spaces, myself without the greatest cutting tools, and today is the day for sitting down and beginning my attempt at self framing. Somehow, (before midnight I hope) there will be pics posted of what I came up with!! Thanks for all the comments, ideas, and support.

I've been going over your ideas with a few people I know that have been married for a short time. Old timers just think this is all a waste since they've lost the wedding lust I guess. One couple both said they liked the family tree in a wedding type binder. The futher suggested to have the Brides family in a section in front, next a family tree of the Groom, then a mixture of all in section 3. Anothe couple suggested a page of photos, then the associated coins, then another photo page, etc. Two couples said they would keep such an album with their wedding album. No one thought if it was a framed item that it may not match their decor in their homes. Yeah, like they have such fantastic taste. A few others I discussed this with said WHY COINS? What will they do with them. A family tree? I hate my relatives. These are the people I seldom discuss coins with. As I mentioned in the beginning, these are my elderly friends.

Well, this is the almost final result. I did notice after I had framed everything that I had forgotten to write the names on the tags so I will have to do that and I am still considering if I should add a little more decoration to the border to make it more wedding like, but I like it simple the way it is. I had trouble finding a super large frame so I decided to do the bride, groom, and their daughter in the large frame and smaller frames for their parents. Obviously, the small frames with wedding dresses are the bride's parents, and the small frames with the little tuxedo jacket is the groom's parents. Would love to hear everyones opinions. thanks for following in my journey! malissa
