I just realized the Whitman Coin show in Atlanta is this week. I went last year and didn't end up buying much of anything. I guess I'm going to try again this year, & will be better prepared. I'm going to sort through my collection & see if there is anything I would like to trade, & will make a list of exactly what I need complete with prices I'm willing to pay.

The show runs from Thursday through Saturday. I'm thinking I will go on Thursday, under the theory that the selection will be best on the first day. Is anyone else going to hit this show?
Rest in Peace

I won't be going, but your theory is right. Many shows charge an early bird admission for people who want to come in and cherrypick. It can sometimes be hundreds of dollars.

This show does have an early bird option, I think it's $50. On the level of collecting I am at I don't think that's a good investment.

I went. It was a SLOW show. In fact, there was so little to buy that after picking up only one coin for myself (an absolutely gorgeous 1807 half dollar) I ended up helping a dealer friend of mine sell off some coins he was dumping. The dealers gobbled them up, and I easily cleared $5k I sales in just around 2 hours.

Also, most dealers I talked to thought that it was a generally poor buying show, although some did pretty good business. Most think that the show in Dalton, Ga next week will be much better for buying.

I went and bought a few cents and some coins for my type set. I was content, but could have spent a lot more time (and money).

The only thing I noticed either way was that a lot of the dealers left early. It was open to the public at 10:00am, and by 12:00 a lot of dealers were packing up. By the time I left at 3:00, more than half of them were gone. I thought that was pretty crummy, since Sat was the only day that regular folk could attend (without taking a weekday off of work).

I'm not familiar enough with coin shows to give a more thorough review.
