I'm curious as to the history or story of this dime that I found in a jar full of coins. I have attached pix for the experts. The coin in question is a 1974 D dime, the front appears fairly normal, back only shows a very weak partial strike near the top left area (which may not be visible in the picture).
I agree. Notice the dent in the obverse and the obvious raised bump in the middle of the reverse. Either a button, or that was the "holding/pressing" spot to turn this on a lathe or something of that nature.
First of all , I noticed this was your first post. It looks to me that maybe someone shot it with a bb gun, if it was an attempt to make a button wouldn't it have two holes. John1
Post-mint damage, the reverse was removed possibly by lathing/machining. A key indicator of the reverse being removed is the fact that no reverse rim is present. There is an upturned rim present on the planchet before a coin is struck. If it was a striking issue, some rim should be present.
Thanks to all for their insightful comments! I believe that this coin may have been somehow manufactured and most of your comments seem to support that. I assume that it may have been some type of insert into a larger design, but I'm only guessing...
