Unknown 1899 Dollar Coin | British Trade Dollar

jlewis87 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/06/2008 04:12 am I have a "one dollar" coin dated 1899 that I have no idea where it's even from. On one side it has a woman standing with a trident in one hand and she is leaning on a large shield. There is also a ship in the background. On the reverse it has what seems to be chinese characters. If you look closely, you'll see the Union Jack (the British flag) on the shield. Though they're listyed under "Great Britain" in the Krause world coin catalogues, they're not considered part of the main British coin series. They were struck in India for use in trade with China and Southeast Asia, and unlike the American Trade dollars in the US, they were never legal tender in Britain. Be aware that, even though they're reasonably common, they're a favourite target of counterfeiters and jewellery copiers.
