Hi Grape, There are a couple things at play here. First, only stage A for this thing shows up well in a close-up photo without doing some tricky side lighting and playing with the angles a lot (which I did not have time to do). You are correct that it doesn't look like much and appears that it would be hard to find. However, the bottom cross bar of the secondary D is actually fairly well raised, and shows up rather distinctly under the lighting I use when searching coins with an 8X loupe. It was an easy spot, although it helps to sorta have memorized the location of the mint mark for each of the more faint RPMs on that year so you know when to look for what.
