Thank God you have a way to take extreme close ups - otherwise the most of us would just see normal cents!

For those who don't what he is seeing that your not.:

As the die continued to wear from usage, the RPM on that area weakened. So much so in later die states it was totally gone.

A million dollar coin? Nah. But CherryPickers' Guide books this one in MS-63 at $125. It's rare, it's a rare D & D, and it's probably on some registry list so those collectors need a high grade one and that pushes up prices at the top end. The coin I just found is not graded, not the more desirable stage A, and I would put it around $35 street value (not for sale, upgrading the one in my collection with this one). So not super expensive as far as coins go, but for an RPM that's quite a lot.

Nice find, I would have completely overlooked that. Of course, I don't search for RPMs.

I'm always amazed by the ridiculously bad mm placements in 1956. I sure hope the mm punch crew didn't serve as Bombardiers on B-29s during WW II or Korea.

I agree with fortcollins, some really wild mm placements in 1956. Makes it a fun year to look at though. I do not agree with Mark that those of us that pay big bucks for high grade examples we want for our collections are suckers. It's great that we can find varieties by looking, but I am a collector and there is no way I can personally find examples of all the rare coins I wish to have. Just as a 1909-S VDB commands a high premium for collectors, so do certain varieties. Exactly like it works for all coins.

Only got through about 150 coins in this lot so far, but found a few more things. I'll post a 1956-D RPM-004, but also have pulled out 1956-D 1MM-026, 1956-D DDO-005, 1955-D DDO-002 and an unlisted Retained Cud on a 1955-D (none listed for this date so should be the first). Nice when you get an unsearched pile of quality coins!

It certainly seems that you did! By the way, I have nothing against searching for RPMs, I just don't do it personally. I have several in my collection, though, and am happy to have them (especially a 1961-D RPM-001 FS-501).

Hi Grape, There are a couple things at play here. First, only stage A for this thing shows up well in a close-up photo without doing some tricky side lighting and playing with the angles a lot (which I did not have time to do). You are correct that it doesn't look like much and appears that it would be hard to find. However, the bottom cross bar of the secondary D is actually fairly well raised, and shows up rather distinctly under the lighting I use when searching coins with an 8X loupe. It was an easy spot, although it helps to sorta have memorized the location of the mint mark for each of the more faint RPMs on that year so you know when to look for what.
