After picking up a Ducalis (See http://goccf.com/t/335172&SearchTerms=ducalis) and doing some reading on it I decided I had to get a Tari (1/4 Gold dinar) It took me a bit of hunting to find one in reasonable grade) Sicily under the Normans was a mix of cultures. so although there were Christian rulers the coins were bilingual Arabic and Latin. The Tari shows this well.

Some nice gold there, with an interesting contrast in text. Good pick up.

Super coin!

But wait! The earlier ducalis (1140-54) you linked has only Christian motifs, and this is back to a Christian/Islamic amalgam (pun intended).

Seems like a regression of sorts? Or was there a different use of this type which dictated that it adhere to older/traditional forms?

The Ducalis was a unique coin. Byzantine in design it was produced for circulation in Southern Italy (although struck in Sicily). In Sicily, the Tari remained the important denomination. The Ducalis only lasted 2 rulers; Roger II and, from memory William I. It could be said that the Ducalis was a false start but, it pointed the way towards the Venetian Grosso( the second ducat).

There were 12 Ducalis to the Tari The reformed Currency system of Roger II was as follows: Solidus Regalis( money of account) = 4 tari= 12 Ducalis = 36 Tercia Ducalis = 72 granum( money of account) = 288 Follaro.

Super pick-up @AK! I would attribute it as Biaggi #1234 and date it to 1189 to 1194 AD (not sure why the one year discrepancy). The Kufic text on the obv (your right hand pic) should say: IL RE TANCREDI VITTORIOSO PER GRAZI DI DIO.

I am using MEC Vol 14 for my reference... from that reference, I am informed William II died 18th November 1189. Tancred only gained papal approval January 1190 and was crowned that month. The discrepancy is only a matter of weeks. I guess Biaggi dates from the death of William II

Super coin, I just finished reading a book about Norman rule in southern Italy and Sicily after I bought a coin of Roger II. Very interesting history, their influence wasn't just in England.
