Hi there, we just purchased a house and the old lady said there was a bucket of coins from when she moved in and we could have them. She wasn't joking I could only just lift it up. I don't think they are worth much although I know nothing about coins. They are Victorian penny's and half crowns 1920-1946 and lots in between. They are all worn but what would they be worth? I think there are 150+ half crowns 1929 seems to have been a polpular year.
Appreciate it if anyone could tell me, I ask my dad who is 70 and he said not a lot

It all depends on condition. A 1929 half crown in perfect shape can be worth way more than a worn out one. But all the silver ones have melt value even if in poor shape. The Victoria pennies have no melt value but can be valuable if in excellent condition or a rare date.
I will need to see pictures to give you a better idea.
I am the former editor of World Coin News (Krause) and specialized in Great BR. and colonies so I should be able to give you a good idea. Pick out the nicest 1929 crown and a few of the pennies and email me a picture. If no photos, at least give me a list of dates and denomination.

Seems like you've got quite the silver hoard on your hands. Worn Victorian pennies are quite common, but half crowns dated between 1920-1946 have about £3 worth of silver in them, each. If those 150+ half crowns are dated in this range then you've got a hoard of £450+ worth of silver in these coins alone. Any silver-looking coin from 1946 and before also has silver in them, so look for those. Coins dated 1919 and before have even more silver in them. Looks like you got lucky!

Great, thanks, you know how new houses are you need every penny , John I will email a picture of what I have now and in the next week I will work out what silver ones there are and there dates, I have not seen any that are perfect but haven't real examined any either

I have a six year daughter who is totally fascinated by them, the design the dates, the changing royals, her favourites are the 3 bit coins. I am cunningly getting her to put the half crowns in date order so I can tell you all what we have.
Its a big bonus to the house as its left me totally penniless, the house was built by a wealthy guy in 1937 and I am wondering if they have always been in the house. I have found cigarette boxes dotted about the house coins in as well.

Lovely. Those baccy tins are identical to ones my dad used in the late 60's and early 70's.

You can never tell what might be hiding in that quantity of coins and would be interesting not only to look at them but also record a census of the dates. Occasionally very rare varieties can also be found, so these should be seen be a specialist.

I have to say Vicky you might be right but I am a bit out of my depth and don't really know what to do with them of where to take them, some are very warn but then some look very good even some of the Victorian pennies look in great shape the best ones you can see clearly the detail of the union flag on the shield. Does anyone know where I could send them to in the UK, or would I just be best selling them as is without going through them?
