I have known that this coin existed for the past 3 years, but until last night I did not have the chance to purchase one. This coin of Vitellius features Vitellius on the obverse and his father L. Vitellius on the reverse.

One focus of my 12 Ceasars collection was to find the most interesting reverses I could for the coins I chose. I already have 2 coins of Vitellius. One is a fairly common type but the other is the dynastic issue. I am very happy to add this rarity to my collection. Part of what I love about this coin is the use of portraits on both the obverse and reverse.

Vitellius AR Denarius
69 CE
17 mm 3.32 g
Obv: A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P: Head of Vitellius, laureate, right
Rev: L VITELLIVS COS III CENSOR: Bust of Lucius Vitellius, laureate and draped, right; eagle-tipped sceptre in front
Very rare
RIC 77
Ex: Silbury Coins January 27, 2019.

Very interesting. I find these issues with rare depictions of little known people fascinating. It seems Lucius Vitellius appeared on a handful of types, often depicted in his role as Censor. Always interesting to see a bust, especially during a period when they actually bear the likeness of the person in question.

I agree that this is an interesting coin. @orfew, is there a test mark or bankers mark on Vitellius' (the son) bust?

Hi @Spence

Yes. there appears to be a banker's mark on the hairline where it joins the face.

Wow, I'm glad I read this - BTW great coin orfew (king of the 12 Caesars). This is the first of seen of such a bankers mark on a coin.

I was looking at this coin of Tiberius and was wondering what that mark was on the obverse - is this a bankers mark as well?

I haven't been able to find a match on the coin.
