during the eisenhower series, different hubs were used to create dies. hubs are the original "copies" of the coin design. from them, thousands of dies will be created. sometimes, one hub is replaced midyear with another one. this is the case of 1971 dollars. one hub had 4 islands and created dies with four islands which struck coins with 4 islands. another hub had 3 islands...
the eisenhower series is an exciting series for hub varieties. in 8 years, there were 5? obverse hubs and 7? reverse hubs. (numbers could be off by 1 or 2)

I was never aware of the 1971 varieties! Pictures? Links?

Here is a link with more information regarding the transition in 1972:

I was wondering how long it'd take you to find this thread Jbuck !..

I wasn't aware of these "islands" either !...
But I just have several proofs, uncirculated, and a bunch of singles "laying around"...(unorganized)....don't have an album for them......let alone seperating varieties with them for notebooks or 2x2's.....
Interesting.....the "Ikes" have a little more "thought provoking" line to them now !

I can't send any pictures because I don't know how to yet. I can barely find my way around the computer but I have some 71 Ikes that have one big island and some that only have two.

I have another question on some 76 type 1 and type ikes, at about 10 o'clock on the moon next to the bell hanger the moon background is missing, I have found many of these

LittleBoy, why is it so hard to grade Ikes? I really have a hard time between XF and AU55. I sent some in for grading and was very surprised. Ones that I thought were AU came back as MS 60 and 62. I could see what I thought was wear . It's even harder for me to grade 62 and 63. I Like the Ike series but it's very challenging.
