A former Norfolk firefighter who took up metal detecting as a hobby after his retirement discovered four rare silver coins dating from 1117, an inquest heard today.
Alan Womack found the first penny, from Henry I's reign, in 1999 and the final one in 2004 on land in Carleton Rode, near Attleborough, possibly from a lost purse.
At the inquest in Norwich, coroner William Armstrong declared the find, which is at the British Museum in London, treasure.
Mr Womack, who retired from the fire service about 17 years ago, is a member of the Anglian Historical Searches club.
Seven Bronze Age gold bracelets found on land in Mid Norfolk were also declared treasure in Norwich today.
Four of the items of jewellery were discovered in a clump by metal detector enthusiast David Perkins at Bawdeswell, near Dereham, and the remaining three were about 18 inches away.
The slightly discoloured and distorted bracelets were dated by the British Museum and probably formed part of a hoard.
