Hi,
First post as I'm hardly a coin collector but have something that has piqued my interest.
I have a set of five coins with an early QE2 picture on one face and blank on the other.
The blank side has a small picture engraved of what looks like the Tower of London.
The face with the queen has small letters such as ion and pol. Each one is different.
I've found the link below to an auction of some Trial Die Florins. They are very similar to these with the exception of the words trial die.
I'm wondering if they are some sort of tourist shop purchase. But to be fair I've not got a clue.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll add some pics when I have better light.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I am intrigued as you are. In my opinion the coins pictured are strikes off trial dies The reverse is off a standard die that The Royal Mint used for die trials of the opposite side. These coins do not have 'BRITT OMN' in the legend - they were of the first type bust, issued into circulation in 1953 Coronation Year only. In this case the trial is of the 2nd type Gillick bust, which was issued into circulation in the years 1954-1970 inclusive. (except 1968 and 1969). Unfortunately, I couldn't get the link to function. Are the small letters in front of the neck in relief (raised), or incuse (pushed into the coin)? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first type Gillick bust master die had to be re cut, because some details (especially around the ear) were very poorly struck up in the type coins issued into circulation in 1953. The master die had to be re cut, because the lack of ear detail problem affected not only all homeland British coins, but every British Commonwealth coin that had the 1st type Gillick bust.

The raised lettering in the field was the normal way The Royal Mint used to indicate that coin is for trial purposes. I have similar trial pieces, but for British West Africa and New Zealand. The BWA piece has standard obverse and reverse, but with tiny raised 'TRIAL' on both sides.

Ok thanks. Are these relatively common then? Or is it worth me getting them checked out?
Thanks

No, they are quite scarce. I have no idea of their market value in the U.K., but my examples are valued at well more than £100 each.

That's amazing. I'll have to find a place to get them checked then.

The best place to get them checked would be the RM. 95% of typical coin dealers will know diddly. They are a very specialized subject.

Hi Peter, Thanks for the info. Just checked on The Royal Mint and it's £20 per coin for online authentication and valuation. As it's a set of 5 that would be £100. Would you think there would be that much value in them? Obviously you'd be speculating on that.

Don't pay anything yet. There must be a local coin store you can go to get a free information look and valuation. That should be the first step. UK members would know if The Royal Mint service is worth anything. Who knows, they might decide that you are not entitled to own them and decide to keep them.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in London so there are plenty of shops. Would any UK member recommend one?

Thanks bud. Next time I'm down that way I shall. As an update I'd messaged a few coin places and have had everything from stick them on ebay or send them to us for further analysis.

Don't put them up on ebay until you have thoroughly satisfied yourself that you have done sufficient price research first. A bit like real estate. You need to know the value in the marketplace of what you are selling, before you decide to sell. Same applies to buying.
