I am new to collecting coins and I know this penny has doubling, but the split ear I am not sure about. Can someone tell me what could have caused this, or is it an error?

To CCF! That's only damage on the ear. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD). The ear took a hit and caused the metal to get pushed over. On the devices, you have Machine Doubling.
